Smelling salts, sometimes called ammonia inhalants, are small capsules or bottles containing a mixture of ammonium carbonate and perfume. They have been used for decades in various settings, including sports and medical settings, to revive consciousness or stimulate alertness.
In the context of the gym or sports, smelling salts are sometimes used by athletes or weightlifters before heavy lifts or intense exercises to stimulate a sudden and brief increase in alertness and arousal. When broken open, the ammonia gas released irritates the nasal passages and triggers a reflex that leads to a sharp intake of breath.
